About the Allis-Chalmers D17
Introduced in 1957, the D17 moved the D Series into the larger row-crop tractor class. It used the Power Director transmission and live PTO, so the operator could shift between ranges with a hand lever while keeping PTO-driven equipment running.
The D17 was built through 1967 in Series I, Series II, Series III, and Series IV versions. Gasoline, LP-gas, and diesel engines were offered during the production run, and the serial number table shows where each series begins.
Serial Number Reference
Serial number locations: The tractor serial number is stamped on the left-front end of the torque housing. The gasoline engine serial number is on the rear left-hand side of the engine block behind the carburetor; diesel engine numbers are on the top left-hand side of the engine block.
